A Rustic and Modern Living Room

Let's get cozy, rustic fireplace goal met!

These large windows looking into a wooded scenery truly is picturesque. The living room overall is a bit more rustic than modern, due to the stone, distressed wood mantel, and cedar beams. But yet it is still light and airy. I was so surprised by the natural cedar beauty of the beams, I didn’t have my builder do any polyurethane or staining. I feel they just draw in more depth and focus to the contrasting windows.

Living room shelving I could have done custom built-ins, which are beautiful, but wanted to leave these wall open for possible future DIY. In the mean time modern bookcases from Target are simplistic with clean lines and natural wood.

Wall lights are the same as the kitchen one, coming from Amazon.

Scandinavian chair is from Hobby Lobby, draped with a rug from Costco, that is the softest thing ever! I would have them scattered everywhere if it wouldn’t look tacky.

So living room furniture, I love dark couches for their ability to hide stains from toddler messes (recently purchased a lighter couch for the basement…mistake). It is much easier to clean a rug than a couch, which leads me to my bohemian rug, you can find several rugs this style (size 6’x9′) for around $100, stay tuned for that post, but for now here is this one.

Side table, I love my gold “drum” these can range around $200 from stores like West Elm, but found this beaut at Target! The options to use this are endless: nightstands, next to tub, or corner decoration with plant. (It also comes in a gorgeous coffee table form, just saying). My other side table is from Hobby Lobby it has a natural wood finish and actually can make a modern “TV tray” sliding easily under the couch up close to you.

Here is a closer look next to my FAVORITE piece of living furniture yet…

This is the spot I am curled up to a majority of the time (actually as I write this even). Found this tufted modern, but also French style, chair at World Market (hint: watch for their 30% off sale, and you can usually add a 15% membership coupon too). It is more beige but gray’s are threaded in, makes it a perfect chameleon for gray or beige room/furniture.

How to decorate book shelves?

I personally believe less is more. I think best to stick to 1-2 color families (with contrasting metals, whites, & blacks). I like natural earth tones so greens and browns used here.

And if you eyed it on my shelf…have to promote Joanna Gaine’s kid’s book The World Needs Who You Were Made To Be

Small Office Space

My “office” is in the living room too, since space needs to be conserved a narrow desk from World Market (no longer available, but they have many other options) with an industrial chair found on Amazon. I had originally used these chairs for dining at my previous house, so if purchasing again I would actually look at these chairs with arms.
